Eyebrow Shaping: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide at Home

How to map, shape and maintain your eyebrows at home, plus when to try threading or waxing.

Quick answer: Eyebrow shaping means tidying your brows into a shape that suits your face. Map three points with a pencil (start, arch and end), brush the hairs up, trim long ones and remove only strays outside the shape. For threading, the AAD says it removes only the unwanted hair, suits areas like eyebrows where you want to keep some hair, and results can last 4 to 5 weeks (AAD).

Eyebrow shaping at home: 7 steps

  1. Wash your hands and tools. Clean tweezers with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Brush brows up with a clean spoolie.
  3. Map the start. Hold a pencil straight up from the side of your nose.
  4. Map the arch. Angle the pencil from your nose through the outer edge of your iris.
  5. Map the end. Angle the pencil from your nose past the outer corner of your eye.
  6. Trim first. Snip only hairs that extend above the brow line when brushed up.
  7. Remove strays below the brow, one hair at a time, in natural light.

Tip: step back from the mirror after every few hairs. It’s easy to over-pluck up close.

Tweezing vs threading vs waxing

MethodPrecisionHow long it lasts
TweezingVery precise, one hair at a timeVaries with hair growth
ThreadingPrecise, many hairs at once4 to 5 weeks (AAD)
WaxingFast, less precise near the shapeA few weeks or longer (AAD)
TrimmingControls length, not shapeUntil hairs grow back

The threading and waxing details come from the AAD’s hair removal page (AAD). The AAD says threading causes little irritation, so it’s an option for sensitive skin, and that removing wax can be painful. The AAD page doesn’t cover tweezing; the tweezing notes here are our general tips.

Eyebrow shaping tools

  • Slanted tweezers for most hairs; pointed tips for tiny ones.
  • A spoolie to brush hairs into place.
  • Small curved scissors for trimming length.
  • A brow pencil for mapping and filling.
  • A magnifying mirror, used with care so you don’t over-pluck.

Keep these tools clean and stored in a closed case. Our guide to vanity organization has simple storage ideas.

Common eyebrow shaping mistakes

  • Plucking from above the brow. Shape mostly from below.
  • Making both brows identical. Brows are sisters, not twins.
  • Over-thinning the tail. Tails can be slow to fill back in.
  • Shaping right before an event. Leave a day for any redness to settle.
  • Plucking on irritated skin. Wait until it calms down.

Eyebrow shaping by brow type

Brow typeShaping tip
Thin or sparseRemove only obvious strays; fill gaps with light strokes
ThickTrim length first, then tidy below the brow
Unruly or curlyBrush up, trim long hairs, set with brow gel
Light-coloredMap with a pencil so you can see the shape
UnevenMatch the arch height, not the thickness

If you want a big change, such as a new arch or a much thinner shape, a professional brow artist can map it with you the first time. After that, you can keep the shape tidy at home with a few minutes a week. Take a photo after a shaping you love so you can match it next time.

Keeping brows neat between shapings

Brush brows up each morning, fill any gaps with light strokes of pencil or powder, and set them with a clear or tinted brow gel. Remove a few strays once a week instead of a big session. Brows are part of your face frame in any natural makeup look.

Brows sit alongside nails and lips in our guide to nail care, lips and brows. For where brows fit in a full face, see how to do makeup.

FAQ

How do I find my eyebrow shape?

Map three points with a pencil: straight up from the side of your nose for the start, through the outer iris for the arch, and past the outer eye corner for the end.

Is threading better than tweezing?

Threading removes many hairs at once and, per the AAD, results can last 4 to 5 weeks. Tweezing is slower but lets you remove single hairs.

How long does eyebrow waxing last?

The AAD says waxing results can last a few weeks or longer.

Should I shape brows from above or below?

Mostly from below. Removing hairs from above can lower or flatten your natural arch.

How often should I shape my eyebrows?

Tidy strays about once a week, and do a fuller shaping every few weeks as hair grows back.
