Tinted Moisturizer: How to Choose the Right One

Oily, dry, combination or mature skin? A simple way to pick a tinted moisturizer, tell it apart from a skin tint or tinted SPF, find your shade and apply it in about 3 minutes.

Five swatches of tinted moisturizer from light to deep shades Save

Quick answer: Choose a tinted moisturizer by your skin type first: oil-free and matte for oily skin, hydrating and dewy for dry or mature skin, something in between for combination. Then match the shade on your jawline in daylight. If you want it to double as sunscreen, the label needs an SPF number and “broad spectrum.”

Your 3-minute tinted moisturizer routine

  1. Cleanse. If your skin is dry, add a light moisturizer first.
  2. If your tinted moisturizer has no SPF, put on sunscreen next.
  3. Dot tinted moisturizer on your cheeks, forehead and chin. Blend outward with your fingers (warm fingers help it melt in) or a damp sponge.
  4. Add concealer only where you still need it, like around the nose or under the eyes.

Time: about 3 minutes. How often: daily, as needed.

What does a tinted moisturizer do?

It hydrates and adds a sheer wash of color in one step. It evens out your tone a little, but it won’t hide much. Think of it as “my skin, but a bit more even,” not full coverage. Some formulas also include SPF.

Tinted moisturizer vs skin tint vs tinted SPF

These names get used loosely, so read the label rather than the name.

  • Tinted moisturizer: skincare first. Moisturizing base with a light tint. May or may not have SPF.
  • Skin tint: makeup first. Usually thinner and more fluid, sometimes with a bit more coverage, often less moisturizing.
  • Tinted SPF: sunscreen first. The main job is sun protection, with color added.

If sun protection is the goal, only count products that list an SPF number and “broad spectrum.” If you wear your tint thinly, a regular sunscreen underneath is the easy fix.

How to choose by skin type

Skin typeLook forSkip
Oily“Oil-free,” matte or soft-matte finish, lightweight gel textureHeavy oils, very dewy finishes
DryHydrating ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, dewy finishMattifying and “oil-control” formulas
CombinationNatural or satin finish; set only the T-zone with powder if neededAnything that feels tight on your cheeks
MatureCreamy, hydrating, dewy or satin finish that doesn’t sit in linesThick matte formulas and heavy powder on top

Which tinted moisturizer is best for older skin?

There’s no single best one, but the pattern is consistent: hydrating, with a satin or dewy finish, in a sheer-to-light layer. Matte and heavy formulas tend to settle into fine lines and look flat. Apply a thin layer, then add a second only where you need it.

How to find your shade

  • Swatch on your jawline, not your hand or wrist.
  • Check it in daylight, by a window.
  • Look at undertone: warm (golden, peachy), cool (pink, red) or neutral.
  • If you’re between two shades, the sheer texture usually forgives going slightly lighter or deeper, but a close match still looks best.
  • Buying online? Check the brand’s shade finder and the return policy before ordering.

How to apply it

Use fingers for the most natural finish, or a damp makeup sponge for a smoother, sheerer layer. Start with less than you think, dot it on the center of your face, and blend outward. Let it set a minute before concealer or powder. If you have oily skin, powder only your T-zone.
